Saint Petersburg is the second largest city of Russia. It is a well-known cultural, educational and scientific center of the country with a world's fame. UNESCO recognized St Petersburg as one of the 10 most beautiful cities in the world. The city was found by Peter the Great in 1703. For almost 3 centuries by man's efforts the cold, marshy plain was transferred in to a miracle city. The city impresses one by a combination of magnificent architecture with strict planning of its broad streets, squares, parks, gardens, canals and museums of great rarity. It could be rightly called an open-air museum. The city is famous for its White Nights. During this period witch lasts for about 50 days (from June 1 until July 15), the sun is shining almost 24 hours a day. During this sightseeing tour you'll be acquainted with the past and present of Saint Petersburg's history and see the main architectural ensembles of the city. The Peter and Paul fortress is the birthplace of our city. It was build for fortification purposes but later became the political prison for the progressive minded people of Russia. During this excursion you will visit the St's Peter and Paul Cathedral with the burial vaults of Peter the Great and other Russian tsars. The remains of the family of Nicolas II were buried there in 1998.

Due to recent changes in border regime the  Organizing committee must announce  that the postconference excursion to Beryozovye Island have to  be cancelled.

The excursion to the source of Neva River on the south coast of Ladoga Lake is planned during Symposium for the last day of work – 10 October. Ladoga, which is the largest fresh-water lake in Europe, is rich in geographical and historical sights. The Neva River is young aging 3,000 years ago yet. We will visit the place where waters of Ladoga Lake stream fast to wide Neva River valley. Here is Schlisselburg (the Nut) Fort situated on the small Nut Island. Prince Yuri Danilovich, grandson of Great Duke Alexander the Nevsky, built the Nut Fort in 1323. Being placed right in the source of the Neva River, fort closed the lake entrance from enemy attack by using of just a few cannons. That is why the fort and nearby city were both called Schlisselburg – Key-Town. The fort was used as a prison prior to 1917 with well-known persons been kept within its walls. Baltic-White Sea Flyway passes just across this place. During autumn migration the waters of Petrokrepost’ Bay are visited by dozens of thousands of sea and diving ducks. In lucky day it is possible to observe up to dozens of thousands of Goldeneyes, Scaups, Tufted Ducks, Long-tailed Ducks there. This stopover is also famous for Bewick’s and Whooper Swans, Divers and Grebes.

During our excursion we will visit the Nut Fort. Bird watch will occur from the island beach or right from the Fort walls. Historical lecture and lunch in old prison will be nice addition to sea duck and swan watching.
