AN ARDUOUS PATH TO BEAUTY
The History of Restoration in St.Petersburg
7 days/6 nights
Among the world's most famous cities, Saint
Petersburg holds a very special place. Its unique layout, vast expanse of
squares and avenues, gilt spires and domes, luxurious and splendorous
architecture and the mysticism of The White Nights have created the
phenomenon of Saint Petersburg.
More than 600 palaces and mansions are located within the historic center and
city's suburbs. Naturally, the questions of reconstruction and high quality
restoration have always been of urgent concern in the city.
For Saint Petersburg the last century marked a time of severe trials,
losses and demolition. After the October Revolution, palaces and churches
were treated in a way that was out disastrous for their historic and
cultural values. During World War II the city was besieged and the closest
suburbs were occupied by Germans for almost 3 years. Palaces and parks
that were once splendid were burnt and plundered.
These circumstances determined the great amount and complexity of required
restoration work. The final success of the city's restoration was tremendous. Those who
recreated the architectural monuments of Saint Petersburg are to be
remembered for their unbelievable work.
This tour is intended for everybody who is interested in history, culture
