The symposium will cover a wide range of glaciological problems under the general motto "Shrinkage of glaciosphere: facts and analysis". Papers on recent studies of various snow-and-ice objects and phenomena are welcome. Entirety of natural ice and snow on the Earth surface known as a glaciosphere combines a high sensitivity to environmental change with a strong control over these variations, giving rise to the complex interactions in broad spatial and temporal scales. In the last decades great progress has been made in understanding of ice-ocean-land-atmosphere interactions in changing climate. Meanwhile the many and varied studies of glaciers, ice caps, snow cover, sea and fresh ice provide the evidences of general glaciosphere shrinkage in increasing numbers. This problem needs in-depth and manifold investigation. The Symposium will offer glaciologists a forum to present and discuss the results of studies of snow cover and avalanches, sea and fresh-water ice, icings and ground ice, glaciers and ice sheets, that are relevant to the Shrinkage of Glaciosphere problem.
The scientific sessions will be held in two flows on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Time limit
for an oral paper presentation including discussion is about 20 minutes. Posters should be installed on the first day
of Symposium (statndard size of poster is 80 x120 cm). Each poster should be also presented in a brief
oral presentation (no more than 2 minutes). The complete texts of oral and poster papers should be prepared
in accordance with the style instructions for the Data of Glaciological Studies (in Russian or English), and
are to be sent by e-mail to: Vladimir N. Mikhalenko,vladimir@mikhalenko.ru
by 1 April 2004 . Send abstract ready for publication (up to 250 words in Russian or English) by same e-mail,
if you have not sent it yet, by 1 March 2004. Only having the complete text of the paper, we can
include it in the final program of Symposium. You will be informed about reception of your paper and
form of its presentation in the middle of April. The final program of sessions with abstracts will be provided
to the participants at registration.
The following demonstration equipment will be avaliable: overheads, multimedia and slide projectors.
Please, inform the organizing committee on device required in advance.
Selected papers from the Symposium will be published by Association in the Data of Glaciological Studies. All papers (including those based on posters) will be refereed and edited according the Association's regular standards before being accepted for publication.
During Symposium the participants will have a chance to purchase the World Atlas of Snow and
Ice Resources at special price - only 150 euro (including postage), compared to a usual price of 500 euro.
