 Metro (Underground, subway)

There are 57 underground stations in St Petersburg forming 4 lines of the Metro Network.

Entrance to the Metro Station
 on Nevsky Prospekt

For longer journeys, or if you are in a hurry, the metro is the most efficient transport. The St. Petersburg Metro is perhaps not as impressive and monumental as the one in Moscow, yet it looks more impressive than most other subways and undergrounds in the world. It is the deepest subway in the world. Normally trains arrive every 2-4 minutes.

The stations open at about 5:45 a.m. and close between midnight and 0:30 a.m.  You can transfer from one line to another until 0:15 am.
It is recommended to avoid "rush hours", when the trains are crowded (7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.). All signs are in cyrillic print. The cost of a trip on the metro is 6 rubles. You can buy a card for 10-20 trips or single metal tokens. These are available at the ticket cash desk inside each station.

Metro Station
"Ploschad Vosstaniya"

Presently the section between the "Lesnaya" and "Ploschad` Muzhestva" stations is closed. Until May 2003, when the reconstruction will be finished, you can cover this gap by using the free shuttle bus ¹ 80.

Sights to see
• Kazan (Kazansky) Cathedral

Built in 1801-1811 (architect Voronikhin) to house the famous miracle-working icon of Our Lady of Kazan (now kept in the Prince Vladimir Cathedral). Kazan Cathedral was constructed in a shape of a Latin cross: the side facing Nevsky Prospect shows a colonnade of 96 columns.
